Cruise Ships to Panama Canal

The Panama Canal was advantageously placed at one of the shortest distances between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in Central America. Most cruises through the canal are “respositioning” cruises, between-season voyages that move ships from the Pacific Coast or Alaska to the Caribbean – or vice-versa.

Cruise of the Day – October 22, 2013

celebrity-century-top-deckOf the nine cruises scheduled to depart today, October 22, 2013, one of the out-of-the-ordinary choices is a trip from San Diego to Hawaii.  San Diego isn’t an overly popular cruise departure point, with less than ten cruises schedule for most months.  But its position as the southwest-most major city in the continental United States makes it the best choice for a cruise from the mainland to Hawaii.

Today’s cruise is a 15-night cruise from San Diego on Celebrity Century that will provide ocean-side views of all of Hawaii’s major islands.  The ship spends four days at sea getting to and from Hawaii, but that still leaves plenty of time to visit Hilo, the Kilauea Volcano coast, Kailua and Kona, Maui and Honolulu.  The return trip also includes a stop in Ensenada, Mexico.

celebrity-century-concierge-class-roomCelebrity Century is a somewhat small-ish cruise ship (1814 guests) that first sailed in 1995 but has been renovated a couple of times to keep things up-to-date.  The AquaSpa by Elemis is considered one of the nicest spas to be found on a cruise ship.  The Main Restaurant has a lot of traditional cruise ship dining ambience, while the Murano Restaurant offers a more intimate experience for a special evening.  The Martini Bar features a bar topped with ice to keep drinks especially cool.

Staterooms on Century include four classes of suites, four “Veranda Class” rooms, Concierge Class, two Ocean View varieties and two inside staterooms.

Celebrity Century will be making cruises out of other Pacific Coast cities next year – Los Angeles and Vancouver, while cruises from San Diego to Hawaii (17 and 18 nights) will continue to be offered on ms Veendam.

Today’s Cruises – September 29, 2013

The world of cruises is truly worldwide today, with 29 different cruise ships setting sail on lots of 7-day voyages and other interesting cruises, including…

  • Carnival Magic making its weekly 7-night trip from Galveston.  This week it’s a tour of the western Caribbean, sometimes it’s to the Bahamas;
  • Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas is departing from Cape Liberty (located within sight of the Statue of Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey) for a 7-night cruise to Bermuda.  Explorer of the Seas is scheduled to remain in New Jersey until next November, also making 5-night trips to Bermuda and 9-night cruises to the eastern Caribbean;
  • ms Statendam leaves Vancouver today on a 5-day cruise to San Diego.  And a 35-day cruise to San Diego.  And a 66-day cruise to San Diego.  Option #1 is a straight trip down the Pacific coast.  Option #2 adds on a month visiting all the interesting islands of the Pacific (really, all of them).  Option #3 adds another month touring Mexico and Central America.  Just depends on how many times you want to visit San Diego.  And how much cash and time you have to spare.

Looking ahead five months from today:  You can celebrate leap year on one of the 31 cruises scheduled to depart on Saturday, February 29, 2014.

Today’s Cruises – September 22, 2013
